This isn't unusual at all - you understand the value of domain experience so do the things that will make you an expert.
1) Give training sessions to those who are also new. It will force you to learn the software.
2) pick up pager rotation. Supporting the software will force you into new areas of the domain.
Those are the things that will get you there fast. It's scary and hard but just wait 6 months to a year or so and you'll be effective. Any new domain that is sufficiently interesting takes a long time to get into.
